My favourite moments of light and dark revolve around emotions, the feeling of growing into manhood and knowing what to do with it. One memorable growing occasion occurred as I travelled through Tuscany on an old train when I was twenty. The light dazzled me, the way it played on the fields, hills and sunflowers brought me to a place of happiness that I always knew was out there. I’d just come through a dark phase, the death of my father, and this trip was my way of dealing with it and learning some of the lessons I needed to be a man in this world. I cherish that light which illuminated dreams and opened my heart.
I don’t shy away from darkness; there is no light without dark. I am drawn to darkness in most aspects of my life, humour, thoughts and love. I trust darkness because if you can see through it you’re more than halfway to where you need to be. New York City encapsulates all of the beauty of light and dark for me; what could be more beautiful than the sun at dusk bouncing off those skyscrapers or reflecting off the Hudson; walking down an avenue soaking it all in and knowing that you are where it’s at. But what goes up, must come down as they say and when the sun goes down that’s when I really hit my stride. Evening, night, or whatever you want to call it is the time for adults and that’s when the real fun begins – pop a cork and toast the ensuing darkness because this is when things get real. As a child I had a pronounced fear of the dark, I simply didn’t understand her charms, but I quickly learned not to fear her but to embrace Miss Thing and to get to know her on deeper level. Needless to say, I’ve never looked back, I am a full fledged creature of the night – I can appreciate her sister Day and we get along just fine, but if truth be told, and it must, Night is my kind of girl and always will be.

Thank You For Being So Wonderful
Since I began my 33 Days Of Love & Light I’ve been thinking a lot about whom I have loved, been in love with and loved by, and it’s with a happy heart I believe there haven’t been many, though I could also argue I’ve never been ‘in love’.
Most recently, I fell a little bit in love with my Samurai and after some transformative time together, we ended things and moved on, as love can only live in the light, and that was no longer the case with us. There’s still lots of love there, I respect him as a colleague, I honor him as a former lover and friend, I appreciate all that he gave me by loving and fucking me into a wider open heart. My latest piece of writing, my first book/collection is my tribute to him, to myself, to our time together and I’m looking forward to spinning into stories the love and lust that we shared.

This month’s meeting is this Sunday, it will be focused on Time Management, and all I can say is: Thaaank You Univerrrssse! For me there have always been two kinds of love, there’s that deeply loyal, abiding kind that I share with friends, family and surprisingly one or two former lovers who have touched my soul and left within it an imprint on my heart – they know who they are…
Then there’s love’s passion, the kind I only share with someone who gets under my skin and finds a way of connecting to me, beyond which I have no control. The barriers come down, they know the wild and lust filled side of me, by ability so share all that I am in my own special way. This sort of love is intense, though strangely not jealous, because I know they share an aspect of themselves with me that is equally passionate and only rarely reached.
However with that all in mind, I think there is also a third way for me to love, somewhere in the middle of these two extremes. A love that has deep loyalty, coloured with caring and sharing, blended with treats of fine cooking (another passion of mine), where the passion longs to live and love to the full, yet somehow mostly lays untapped. Maybe with time and life’s general attrition, I’ll break down those barriers that are greater than mine? But I am a creature of passion, and as such cannot be denied the chance to love ‘in extremis’, for as long as I live this passion won’t die.

I Love A Good Quiz!
