I read this quote at a very early age (still haven’t figured out who it’s by… anyone?) and it’s one that’s stuck with me throughout my life.

Which is probably why I don’t have a big house, the latest shiny gadgets, fancy car etc.  (actually, I don’t have the car because I was far too busy partying at 17 to learn to drive and then just left the country).  Instead I chose adventure and new life experiences which has given me crazy stories to tell and an abundance of memories – even the shit that sometimes comes with spontaneity is now a fond, funny (fuzzy) memory…

For me, It’s living and learning.

Chasing the Light

The first time I chased the light.

It was a rainy spring evening. The sun had set and the engines of the jet started
to rev up. It was no ordinary jet plane. The engines started to spin faster. I was
nervous. I dug my nails into the soft luxury leather of the most perfectly formed
seat and I closed my eyes. Within minutes, we would be taking off.

Pressed deep into the curves of my seat, the g-force kept my body firmly in place.
My nails dug deep, and then deeper into the leather and I shut my eyes tight as we glided effortlessly into the air. Then the jet steadied and the lights that signalled safety came on. My grip relaxed. First, my eyes opened a little and then they widened. We had broken through the rain and clouds, higher than I had ever been before or would ever go again. We were surfing the atmosphere, seducing the stars.

That was when I first caught a glimpse of her.

From the corner of my eye, I caught her subtle glow. The softness of her curves,
her alluring magic. She had me gripped, but I had yet to look at her. I turned, drawing my face closer in her direction. Through the smallest of views, I pressed my face against her as far as I could. I snuck a peek from where I had come, where her arm stretched out in one direction, and the sky was alight with stars in velvet fire coloured night. Then I looked to where her other arm was pointed, and I held my breath.

In the west, the sun was rising and its rays sneaked closer to the slumber that was expanding out in to the east. In front of me, and high above, the darkness and the
light entwined over the expansive ocean. There was no light and there was no dark, just a glow playing on the perfect curves of her stretched out on the horizon. My eyes followed the shine and that was when I looked at her. Glistening in the dewy light there she was, the Earth, as I had never seen her before.

That was the first time I chased the light.

This was the one moment in my life when I should’ve had my camera with me. I’ve never forgotten that moment. I remember that view every day, and when I remember it I wish I’d taken a bl**dy picture. Ever since then, I have never left home without my camera.
